Hub was General Assembly's first mobile app designed to help the community discover personalized and curated events in tech, business, and design. Events were vetted by Hub's community curators and tailored to users' interests and career goals. Users could sign up receive weekly emails and notifications to attend events along with other community members.

Hub User Flows

The user flow can be summarized by 4 main areas: Sign-up, Onboarding, Event Feed, Event Submission. We simplified the digital experience by maintaining only the necessary screens, modals and interactions. The intent of keeping it simple was based on the time constraints of our average users, and a desire to emphasize the true experience was about gathering the community members at physical events.

Bringing the Community Together —

The GA Hub team introduced “Highlights” as a feature allowing users to bookmark/highlight an event that interested them. Highlighting an event would automatically send a calendar invite to your email. Since users were connected to Facebook and a GA network, Highlighting an event also meant the user could see fellow GA students/alumni/employees who were also interested in attending the event. Pulling up this relevant information was a key step to bringing our community together.

Sunrise and Sunset —

GA Hub first grew within the New York City community and was quickly expanded to LA, SF and all GA markets (14 locations worldwide). While this was exciting for students/alumni, it provided no revenue to the company and was therefore difficult to maintain the product. Sadly, the app was sunset after ~2 years of research, design and development.

Personally, this was a great lesson in identifying foundational problems, testing with a variety of users, and prioritizing business objectives. Following this project, I focused on the crucial idea that before attempting to activate a community, we must first allow users to build their online identity within a community setting. See GA Directory for more.
